Those who took these heartburn drugs had a 50% increased risk of having recurrent Clostridium difficile infections. Recent studies have also been seeing increases in C. difficile infections in younger healthy people.

After two weeks on the diet they then gave the mice high doses of acetaminophen. Which can damage the liver to the point of death. Finding the supplementation greatly reduced the toxic effects of the drug compared to mice not given the probiotics.
