Pearls of Wisdom
Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a study of the effects of vitamin B12 on Parkinson's disease. Finding that vitamin B12 could reduce the effects of dopamine loss in Parkinson's disease caused by genetic mutations in the LRRK2 gene. Increased activity of the LRRK2 enzyme contributes to accumulation of toxic alpha-synuclein fibers in dopamine producing neurons. The form of vitamin B12 called AdoCbl was able to directly bind to LRRK2, altering it's structure disrupting its normal function. They found that treatment with the vitamin B12 could prevent the death of nerve cells that produce dopamine and the occurrence of symptoms associated with neurodegeneration.
