Monologue
Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show today telling the story of how fats became demonized. Explaining that was part of a campaign to sell Crisco. The German Navy developed a lubricant that didn't smoke for use in their submarines. After the war they sold the patent to Proctor and Gamble. Their plan was to use it to make soap. After that didn't work out they paid the American Heart Association 1.7 million dollars to promote Crisco as a healthy alternative to cooking with lard and butter.
Pearls of Wisdom
Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a large study that involved 18 countries. Researchers from the Population Health Research Institute at McMaster University found that a diet high in refined processed carbohydrates increased the risk of premature death. Additionally they found a diet high (35%) in fats had a 23% lower risk of premature death. Something Doc has been stating for decades.
